Most Popular Norwegian Baby Names

Top rankings amongst the most popular baby names in Norway have been steadily changing since the mid 90’s. “Thea” has been a strong contender for years, and has finally made it to number one in 2006. This year’s most popular Norwegian boys’ name is “Jonas” which also made its first appearance at number one.

Surprising changes have hit the boys’ name list with “Markus” dropping seven places and names like “Elias” and “Sebastian” finding themselves in the top ten for the first time recently. There are only a couple of changes
to the most popular girls’ names in 2006. “Thea” traded spots with “Emma” for the number one and two slots. In the past, names the royal family gave their babies substantially impacted the most popular baby name in Norway, today royal influence plays a much smaller role.

In 2006, the top ten most popular baby names in Norway for boys were: Jonas, Mathia, Andreas, Elias, Sebastian, Sander, Tobias, Martin, Henrik, and Emil. For girls: Thea, Emma, Julie, Ida, Nora, Ingrid, Emilie, Amalie, Maria, and Malin.
